In the Art many different otherworld beings are recognized. In our system we find that it is the Queen, known in earlier times as the Lady or the Dame, who is prominent.

As evidence of the suggestion that a female otherworld being known as the Dame was associated with Historical Witchcraft one can look to "The Masque of Queens", a play written in 1609, Scotland. In this there is a wonderful scene where a Coven of Witches is portrayed as they evoke the Dame. The following is an adaptation from the original. It is not a word for word quotation, but rather my own, using symbolism inherent to our practices that fit well with this very old recitation. If you would like to see the full original 1609 version please refer to "The Masque of Queens" by Ben Jonson Charme 1 - 3.
"Witches Stay, we seek our Dame, Call upon Her by Her name
The Charm we use that She quickly anoints and comes a way!
Dame, Dame, the watch is set. Quickly come, we are all met.
From the Lakes, from the fens, from the rocks, from the dens,
From the tombs, from the graves, here are we!
The weather is fair, the wind is good, Up Dame on your horse of wood,
Tuck up your frock, straddle the Goat, or the Green Cock!
Make a bridle of thread, to roll up the miles you have rid.
Quickly come, for we all stay!
The Raven is abroad, the snake, hare and toad.
The spindle is turning, the Moon is Full.
The ditch is made, the nail and center.
There lacks but She, She who gives passion and power!
Quickly Dame bring your part.
Spur, spur upon little Martin,
Merrily, Merrily make him sail.
A worm in his mouth, a thorn in his tail.
Fire above, fire below.
With whip in hand to make him go.
O She Comes!"
